Where Wallpapering Goes Right or Wrong

Wallpapering is one of our most requested services, and one of the least forgiving. A paint job that is slightly off can be touched in. A pattern hung out of plumb cannot.

We hang everything from standard vinyls to designer, grasscloth, heritage and paste-the-wall papers, and we are comfortable with large-format repeats — botanical, geometric and mural panels where every drop has to relate to the last one.

Almost every wallpapering problem traces back to the wall rather than the paper. Old adhesive left in place, uneven or absorbent plaster, and skipped sizing are what cause seams to open and bubbles to appear weeks later. We strip properly, make good, and line where the wall needs it.

We will work with paper you have already chosen, or point you towards suppliers in London and Surrey to suit the budget and style. We will also tell you honestly how many rolls the job needs — including the wastage a large repeat forces — before you order.

Feature walls — the most common request, and the one where pattern centring matters most.
Full rooms — bedrooms, dining rooms, studies and living rooms.
Stairwells and hallways — high, awkward and genuinely difficult to do well; proper access is essential and we price for it.
Chimney breasts and alcoves — where the pattern has to be set out before the first drop goes on, not adjusted afterwards.

Preparing the Wall Properly

The paper is the visible part; the wall underneath decides whether it stays looking right.

We strip existing paper rather than hanging over it, and we wash off residual adhesive — old paste left on the wall is a very common cause of bubbling. Damaged or uneven plaster is filled and sanded, and porous or freshly plastered walls are sized so the paper can be positioned rather than grabbing on contact.

Lining paper is not always necessary, but on older walls, dark previous colours, or with thin and delicate papers it makes a substantial difference. We will tell you whether your walls need it and price it separately so the choice is yours.

Can you hang wallpaper I've already bought?

Yes — most of our wallpapering jobs use paper the customer has chosen. Tell us the brand, pattern repeat and roll count at the quote stage and we will confirm whether you have ordered enough before we start.

How many rolls will I need?

It depends on the wall area and, critically, the pattern repeat — a large repeat can add significantly to wastage. We will measure and tell you the number before you order, which is much cheaper than discovering it mid-job.

Do you remove old wallpaper?

Yes, and we take the old adhesive off with it. Hanging new paper over old, or over residual paste, is the most common cause of seams lifting later.

Do I need lining paper?

Not always. It is worth it on uneven or older walls, when covering a dark colour, and with thin or delicate papers. We will give you an honest answer for your walls rather than adding it automatically.

Can you wallpaper a stairwell?

Yes. Stairwells are one of the trickiest wallpapering jobs because of the height and access, and they are a regular part of our work. The quote will include the access equipment needed to do it safely.
